Faculty and Research

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering boasts an excellent faculty of growing strength and diversity. Thirty of its 169 members, many of whom were widely sought by top universities, joined USC in the last three years.

Viterbi's faculty roster includes 37 members of the National Academy of Engineering, over 62 winners of National Science Foundation Presidential and Career Awards, and the 2003 winner of the Association for Computing's Turing Prize, often described as the "Nobel Prize in computing." More than a third of the faculty have been elected fellows of their respective professional societies.

Increasing the diversity of its faculty is an important goal of the Viterbi School. Significantly contirubiting to this effort is the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Program, which was described by USC Provost Max Nikias as "making a vital difference in the lives of women at USC."

Whether you are earning a Master's degree, completing a certification program, or brushing up with a Professional Programs course, you will have an opportunity to learn from some of the brightest academic minds as well as industry-leading professionals at the Viterbi School of Engineering.

Research

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is at the forefront of research in information technology, biotechnology and a full spectrum of engineering disciplines. The Viterbi School is second in the nation in research funding per faculty member, and is internationally top ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering.

The Viterbi School is home to two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers (the Integrated Media Systems Center and the Biomimetic Engineering Center), as well as the first University Center of Excellence selected by the Department of Homeland Security (CREATE -- the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events). USC is also home to the world-famous Information Sciences Institute and the Alfred Mann Institute for biotechnology.
